Oscars: Academy Invites 395 to Become Members

Three hundred and twenty two… 683… 774… 928… 842… 819… and now 395.

After several years of massive expansion focused largely on changing its demographics in the aftermath of the #OscarsSoWhite uproar, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday returned to a smaller list of invitations for new members — albeit one that still includes plenty of big names, such as Janet Jackson, Robert Pattinson, H.E.R., Henry Golding and Eiza Gonzalez, as well as others who are more closely associated with TV (e.g. Kenya Barris, Hugh Bonneville, Laverne Cox, Issa Rae) or theater (e.g. Nathan Lane).

“To enable steady future growth and to ensure the necessary infrastructure, staff resources and environment to support all Academy members, the number invited to membership was limited to roughly half that of recent years,” the Academy said in a statement accompanying the list. …
