Jonathan Yang: Picture Editor

What is your name?

Jonathan Yang

What’s your job?

Picture Editor

List the projects you’re most proud of:

Bajillion Dollar Properties, Burning Love, Broke Ass Gameshow, Work Of Art and Stupid Pet Tricks

Favorite Film:

A Bridge Too Far.  I’m a huge war film buff.

Favorite TV Series/Shows:

Brooklyn Nine-Nine.  As a kid growing up in NJ in the 80s I always watched “Drive-In Theater” kung fu movies on WNEW Channel 5 NY.  I was introduced to the magic of the Shaw Brothers.  I loved these movies because of the strong Asian characters which was a welcome experience that ran contrary to the mostly negative and racist Hollywood depictions of Asians at the time.

What are you working on right now?

Currently in between gigs.  I just finished a two week European tour with my band The Sound Reasons. We play and live 60s garage music.

Who and what are your influences and/or mentors?

An early mentor of mine is LA based editor Ivan Victor.  Ivan is an amazing editor specializing in comedy.  I was his assistant in NYC on a sketch comedy show called The Whitest Kids U Know.  We became fast friends and he was and is to this day always generous with advice and insight into the craft and business of editing.  We also share a passion for dim sum.

Memorable experience of being an Asian editor:

When I worked on the reboot of The Weakest Link with Jane Lynch during the pandemic there were three Asian editors on the team which was awesome.  It’s very rare when there’s one let alone three.

Guilty pleasure viewing:

Emily In Paris.  Please don’t judge.

What are you thankful for?

I am thankful to my parents for giving me everything I ever needed to succeed in life and my wife, two kids and cat for putting up with me.
