Cut to Black: Marvin Hudgens, Assistant Editor

For each day in the month of February, the African American Steering Committee will be highlighting Local 700’s African American members, both past and present, and their accomplishments. We look forward to showing the contributions and influences African Americans have had on the industry.

Name:  Marvin Hudgens

What’s your job? Assistant Editor

List the credits you’re most proud of. “Big Sky”

What are you working on right now? Nothing, someone hire me!

Who and what are your influences and/or mentors? No mentors yet, but definitely looking for someone to help me grow. As for influences I’ve always been drawn to the stuff David Simon puts out. The way his narratives are character driven and plot wise are so well structured.

What books are you reading, shows are you watching and/or movies you’re excited about? Currently watching “Fargo,” one of the best yet also underrated shows out there. Also very excited about the next season of “Silo.”

What would be your superhero name? Random Fact

What are your black history month memories and any cultural or historical impacts on your life? As an avid football watcher. I think Colin Kaepernick’s protests come to mind. It was a simple yet effective way voice his message.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Be sure to stretch

If you could time travel, when would you go and why? I would venture to the last time the Powerball was close to a billion dollars and not won by anyone.

What’s a little known fact about you? What are your hidden (or not so hidden) talents? I can label a blank map with almost 100% accuracy. I also spent a year learning something new every week.

What’s your favorite (Black) television/movie moment? The “I Know Black People” skit from “The Chappelle Show.”

Was there a television show/movie that inspired you to pursue your career? Not one in particular, it was mainly me thinking about enjoying films with my dad. Or the many hours I spent up at night watching Nick at Nite and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.”

What’s your personal/professional mantra? It’ll be fine, it’s just television, we’re not curing cancer here.

What’s the last show/movie that left you speechless? Kinda hard to shut me up, but the last thing that took me aback was the bomb scene from “Oppenheimer.” Also everything
to do with “191.7”

What would be your dream project to work on? Anything that David Simon is doing. Something with Larry David. But mainly something well crafted, shot with a vision in mind and preferably not a remake.
