Throughout the month of May, the Pan Pacific Asian Steering Committee will highlight Asian American members—past and present—celebrating their achievements and contributions.
Stephanie (Ng) Lowry grew up in Jackson Heights, NY and is of Chinese ancestry. She was part of the first co-ed class at Hunter College High School in Manhattan and attended the USC School of Cinematic Arts as a production major. She graduated with honors and a Phi Beta Kappa pin and was part of the Trojan Rowing Crew.
Stephanie wanted to be a cinematographer, but there were virtually no women cinematographers back then. Fate took her into editorial, first in sound, then picture, and finally music. She was an assistant picture editor for Richard Marks and Carol Littleton.
After starting a family, she transitioned into music editing, first as an assistant then moving to music editor. She has served on the MPEG Board representing music editors since 2003 and is active in the Motion Picture Academy Music Branch Executive Committee, chairing the Song Committee. Stephanie recently received an award for her contributions to the AMPAS Asian Affinity Group.
While the bulk of her credits have been in features, she has been nominated for and won two Emmy Awards. She feels her biggest achievement has been raising two successful children as a single working mother.
