Yoshikawa got his start “making movies” in his teens, goofing around with his friends, using his dad’s camcorder and editing with two VHS decks in his family’s living room. He was fascinated with any “behind the scenes” programs that he saw on TV. They opened his eyes to the process of filmmaking.
After graduating from the Film Studies department at UC Santa Barbara,
Yoshikawa worked as an Assistant Editor for over a decade on a wide variety of projects. He was fortunate to learn the craft of editing from such esteemed mentors as Richard Chew and Robert Leighton. He also had the opportunity to work with several actors-turned-directors such as Tom Hanks, Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest and Forest Whitaker.
Once firmly seated in the editor’s chair, Yoshikawa served as editor on many features. They include several films by Terrence Malick (The New World, The Tree of Life, To The Wonder, Knight of Cups) and four movies in The Hunger Games franchise: Mockingjay (parts 1 & 2), The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and the upcoming Sunrise on the Reaping. He has also worked on several television projects including Chief of War, Westworld, I Am the Night, See and the pilot of Succession.
He is proud to be a founding mentor in the ACE Diversity in Editing Mentorship group and continues to enjoy fostering young editing talent through the program.
Yoshikawa has been a member of ACE since 2014 and in AMPAS since 2016. .
