What is your name?
Edward Chin
What is your classification or job?
Picture Editor – member of MPEG since 2011
What was your first union job?
Assistant Editor on Borgia for Netflix.
List the credits you’re most proud of.
The Detour – This was the first pilot that I edited which was picked up as a series. It was a great experience helping to lay the groundwork for what the series would be and then helping it evolve over the course of 4 seasons. Elsbeth – I feel fortunate to be a part of a great post team, led by Margo Johnston, producing a quality show that is heading into a 4th season. And Jon Tolins is a great showrunner, but more importantly a great person, and it sets the tone for the whole production.
Who are your influences or mentors?
I was lucky to be able to learn from editors Bijan Shams, David Cripton, Vaj Potenza, Ric Serena, Al Chan, Jeffrey Williams, Karl Dawson, Duncan Cameron and Greg Costa on my first job in New York and am still able to call many of them friends today. I’ve also worked with assistant editor Anne O’Brien on many projects and have had the benefit of her vast experience. I am constantly learning something new from her.
What is your guilty pleasure – TV shows or movies?
I admit that I’ve seen my fair share of Hallmark movies and romantic comedies. Sometimes you just want to relax and not think too much while watching a movie!
What would be your dream project to work on?
Growing up, Star Wars was my favorite film and I’m still a huge fan, so I would love to work on a Star Wars project someday. I’ve also never worked on an Asian-led project and would like to have that opportunity someday.
What’s a meaningful film to you as an Asian American that you would recommend?
There isn’t just one single film that has been meaningful to me. Seeing Asians produce films across many different genres has been an inspiration to me because it shows that we can work on any type of project and be successful. We don’t have to limit ourselves.
