Cut to Black: Kaela Brown, Assistant Finishing Colorist

What’s your job? Assistant Finishing Colorist at Marvel Studios

List the credits you’re most proud of. “Loki” Season 2, Euphoria” Season 1, The Morning Show” Season 1

What are you working on right now? Many Marvel Episodics that I can’t name at the moment.

Who and what are your influences and/or mentors? Matt Watson, the Colorist at Marvel Studios is my current mentor. I am influenced by Siggy Ferstl and Stephen Nakamura at company 3, 2 colorists I worked with while at company 3 from 2019 – 2020.

What books are you reading, shows are you watching and/or movies you’re excited about? I’m currently watching Suits” and Raising Kanan” season 3 and I’m reading Viola Davis’ book “Finding Me: A Memoir.”   I’m excited about “The Joker: Folie a Deux,” I love Joaquin Phoenix.

What would be your superhero name? I found a superhot generator and my name would be Blue Fire.

What are your black history month memories and any cultural or historical impacts on your life? Malcolm X,” the film by Spike Lee.  I remember seeing it in theatre’s when I was 7 and it left a huge impact on me. I went on to read the Autobiography of Malcolm X and about the Civil Rights movement. Reading about black leaders and their fearlessness to help their community out of prejudices in North America will always be inspiring to me.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? There’s no such thing as a dumb question, don’t assume anything, always ask if you’re unsure.

If you could time travel, when would you go and why? I like experiencing life as it is, I like being in the present and enjoying the journey in present time.  I can’t change the past and the future isn’t here yet, everything that’s happened up to this point happened exactly how it was supposed to, to get me to where I am today.  So, I don’t think I want to time travel.

What’s a little known fact about you? What are your hidden (or not so hidden) talents? I can draw well; I love drawing cartoons.

What’s your favorite (Black) television/movie moment? Angela Bassett in Waiting to Exhale walking away from the burned car with her ex-husbands clothes in it “It is Trash”

Was there a television show/movie that inspired you to pursue your career? Most Spike Lee movies have inspired me to pursue film/tv

What’s your personal/professional mantra? My business is my pleasure, I love what I do.

What’s the last show/movie that left you speechless? Black Mirror” Season 1 and 2

What would be your dream project to work on? Any of the shows in the Power universe.
