For each day in the month of February, the African American Steering Committee will be highlighting Local 700’s African American members, both past and present, and their accomplishments. We look forward to showing the contributions and influences African Americans have had on the industry.
Name: Paul Ero Jr.
What’s your job? Assistant Editor
List the credits you’re most proud of. Working on S3 of “Pose” & S2 “Blindspotting.” “Pose” was the first drama I got a chance to work on. I worked with some really talented people and of course the show was amazing! “Blindspotting” is really well written and acted. It was a pleasure to work on.
What are you working on right now?
I’m currently working on “Shaka: King of the Zulu Nation”
Who and what are your influences and/or mentors?
Mentor: Libya El-Amin – Having her as a mentor has helped me: She was the first person to allow me to shadow her. At the time we met I was trying to make the jump from reality to scripted. She has become a great friend and someone I consider family.
What books are you reading, shows are you watching and/or movies you’re excited about?
Currently watching “The Last of Us.” Also, I’m stoked to see, “Oppeneheimer.”
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.
What’s a little known fact about you? What are your hidden (or not so hidden) talents? I was a musician most of my life. The guitar and bass were my instruments of choice. With sound being such a huge part of what we do as editors, having a background in music and sound engineering has helped me with understanding the little things, when it comes to mixing music and sound effects with dialogue.
Was there a television show/movie that inspired you to pursue your career? “The Sixth Sense,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Malcolm X”
What’s your personal/professional mantra? Do what you have to do, until you can do what you want to do.
What’s the last show/movie that left you speechless? “Memento.” The non-linear storytelling structure, combined with a complex and well thought out plot. At the time I had not watched a story/film being told in that manner.
What would be your dream project to work on? I would love to work on a Christopher Nolan film or Spike Lee joint.
