‘Mank,’ ‘Mulan’ and ‘Da 5 Bloods’ Among Art Directors Guild Nominations

The Art Directors Guild announced the nominations for the 25th ADG Awards for production design, which will be presented during a virtual ceremony on April 10.

The nominees for a period film are Mank, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mulan, News of the World and The Trial of the Chicago 7. The fantasy film category nominees are Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, Pinocchio, Tenet, The Midnight Sky and Wonder Woman 1984. Elsewhere, the contemporary film nominees are Da 5 Bloods, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Palm Springs and Promising Young Woman.

Over the past five years, the winner of the ADG’s period film prize went on to win the Oscar for production design twice, in 2018 for The Shape of Water and in 2020 for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice during that time, in 2016 for Mad Max: Fury Road and 2019 for Black Panther. And in 2017, La La Land picked up the ADG Award for a contemporary film on the way to winning the Oscar for production design.

As previously announced, Ryan Murphy will receive the Cinematic Imagery Award during the ADG Awards presentation. …
